I was asked to present my thoughts on personal branding to the 4th year class of the York University/Sheridan College design program on Monday. One of the key messages I delivered was on the importance of social networking through LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to stay in touch with what's current and to maintain your visibility. I also emphasized that protecting your personal brand online was as important as establishing it.
My thinking regarding the protection of your personal brand in the online world was to caution against posting photos of drunken frat parties, avoidance of strong political or social viewpoints, etc. But I realized afterwards that not keeping a brand current was just as damaging as not establishing one in the first place, or by being careless with it.
I'm guilty of the very sin I lectured against two days ago.
So - expect me to start tweeting again. To update my LinkedIn profile (which I haven't touched in over two years). And posting regularly to this blog. I've also been asked to guest post to two other blogs - coolbusinessideas.com and digitalsignagetoday.com, both of which I'm planning to pursue.
If you don't see stuff from me soon in all of these places, please feel free to kick my ass!
